The two cities of Dongguan and Guangzhou signed a cooperation agreement. The two parties will accelerate the integration of port resources and create a combined port of Guangzhou and Dongguan. In the future, “Made in Dongguan” can also be accelerated.

According to statistics, in 2016, Dongguan Port completed a cargo throughput of 146 million tons, completed a container throughput of 3.64 million TEUs, and container throughput ranked 11th in the country and 40th in the world.

At present, there are 212 production berths in Dongguan Port, including 29 berths with a capacity of over 10,000 tons. The designed capacity is 108 million tons. However, subject to the problems of Humen Bridge and the depth of the dock, the tonnage of ships at Dongguan Port is below 70,000 tons. It is difficult to meet the needs of large-scale ships. With the construction of Dongguan's Marina Bay New District, Dongguan Port will also expand its capacity to speed up the “manufacturing of Dongguan” to the sea.

According to Dongguan Port, the Shajiao section of the Binhai New Area boasts Dongguan's most economical coastline and water depth conditions, with a maximum capacity of 200,000-ton container berths and a water depth of up to 18 meters. It is capable of constructing large-scale deep-water ports and opening up ocean liners. The natural advantages, thus conditions to port as a carrier, nurture the formation of emerging international shipping portals. Dongguan also hopes to take the port city as an important traction force, develop an economic model of kelp land and regional cooperation, and fully integrate it into the Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Bay Area.

Last month, Guangzhou and Dongguan signed the "Guangzhou People's Government Dongguan Municipal People's Government Deepening Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement", "Guangzhou Nansha New District Dongguan City Binhai New District Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement", "Guangzhou Port Authority Dongguan Port Management Committee Port Cooperation Development. protocol". In terms of ports, the two cities for the first time proposed that both parties will accelerate the integration of port resources, promote the implementation of the integration of Sui and Wan ports, and build a combined port of Guangzhou and Dongguan Port.

The agreement states that the cities of Sui and Guan will realize the integration of port resources and the sharing of shipping resources, scientifically plan port resources, and accelerate the construction of terminals in the two cities. Take Guangzhou Port as a leader to speed up the integration of state-owned port companies in the two cities. Collaboratively optimize the customs clearance efficiency and hardware facilities of Guangzhou Port and Dongguan Port, and increase the proportion of manufacturing enterprises in the Pearl River Delta region passing through the ports to import and export goods. Accelerate the promotion of major projects such as the public waterway project of Dahu Island in Guangzhou, and jointly improve the navigation environment of the Zhujiang Waterway. In addition, the two ports will jointly develop and construct the second phase of Xinsha Port, and plans to build four general-purpose berths of 100,000-ton-ton level. The project is now advancing the approval of sea and environmental assessment.

“The linkage between the ports of Guangzhou and Dongguan is very imaginative. On the basis of the current cooperation in Xinsha Port, the two sides can also expand cooperation to all port resources within the jurisdiction.” Zheng Tianxiang, Professor, Zhongshan University, Hong Kong and Macao Zhujiaojiao Research Center It said that Dongguan Port can focus on the development of offshore oceanic operations, and Guangzhou Port will focus on the development of ocean-going offshore operations to create complementary advantages. In particular, combined with the China-European banjo, it will become a hub of the “Belt and Road” initiative, which will allow Huawei mobile phones and other high-tech products to be easily shipped out, while allowing other products to enter the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau more conveniently.
